April & May 2006 Murals Today, Gone Tomorrow By Leena Prasad A colorful and dramatic sight captivated me as I was walking in The Mission neighborhood near Valencia and 22nd Street. There were wood construction walkways spanning the length of 22nd, mid-way from Valencia just past the famous tapas bar of Esperpentos, to around the corner and across from Revolution Cafe. The walls of the temporary walkways were covered with vivid murals. This was in January of 2006 and I didn’t know how long the murals will be there so I pulled out my camera and started clicking. I usually use words in this column to express my thoughts and impressions of the visual narratives that I find in The Mission but the images are so powerful that I decided to allow the visuals to make a case for themselves:
The temporary
construction walkway murals can be seen on 22nd Street between
Valencia and Mission (if the wooden walkway is still there…). For
comments/complaints/kudos/article ideas/etc., please write to Leena Prasad at art@WeAreNotAmused.com. Please let me know in your letter if it’d be
okay to publish it as part of this column. |
