Paintings by Virginia Bowen
Representationally drawn and painted images intermingle with
dripped and scumbled wax and paint to form organic networks. Sewing patterns,
maps, and other collage elements, are layered together with paint and wax. What
emerges, interwoven within a tactile, multi-layered, transparent construction,
is a momentary glance at the complex relationship between ourselves and nature. September 5, 2005 - September 26, 2005. Artists' Television Access Balazo Gallery Up

Renaissance -
Kosmic Renaissance is a meeting of electronic and acoustic improvisation. KR's
primary audience resides in Japan. The group's
leader, Shing02, earned his reputation as a hip-hop MC, and producer through
Mary Joy recordings based in Tokyo, Japan. Shingo02's
latest project delves into the world of instrumental electronic fusion music.
Using a multitude of unique sounding instruments, the
group takes epic sonic excursions that stride through the realms of
electronica, hip-hop, and avant-garde jazz. This trio pushes jazz
tothe edge with tabla drumming, live saxophone and saxophone looping, and groundbreaking emceeing using the newest in
technology, the Vestax Faderboard, developed by Kosmic Renaissance artist
Shing02. Their 2005 fall performance with the San Jose
Jazz Festival marks a strong first step in establishing the trio's presence in
the U.S. With their Japan release of their new Live in Tokyo
CD/DVD, Kosmic Renaissance is preparing for their third Japan tour within the
year. Shing02 (emcee/faderboard/ARP), David Boyce

Apocalyptic Renaissance Part 3 - The Apocalyptic Renaissance: Doing Something With Nothing
is a challenge to the musical community. What
would you do if the power went out for good? There would be no DJ’s, no
amplifiers, no microphones, nothing. Or would there be? Come
and find out for yourself. Either way we will still be altering the artistic
landscape in radical new ways. Featuring- Eli Wise;
Original music, ranging from witty descriptions of school crushes gone bad to
jagged poems about loss. Sharp, intricate and tight. The
Hand: “Pinky, Ring, Middle, Index & Thumb: A Handful of Songs for Ukulele
and Kazoo” an original composition performed on strings and
accordion. Sofia Coppola: Fabulous Women and a boy who sing, strum and play magical cellos thru loops and solar panels.
The Useless Circus: San Francisco’s newest Utilitarian gems. Plus very special
guests. $5-$10 donation. Doors at 8:30pm. Show at 9:00pm. Practice Makes Perfect: Bay Area Conceptual Craft This exhibition explores the work of a group of
emerging and established Bay Area artists who utilize highly refined skills to
produce conceptually based work. The exhibiting artists undertake
labor-intensive actions that are deliberate, elaborate, and verge on the
obsessive. Employing materials ranging from the traditional paper, fabric, and
wood to unconventional found and damaged objects, they produce work that is rooted
in conceptual art, moving beyond well-honed techniques to convey a complex set
of ideas. In essence, their craft exists in the service of content. Featured
artists include Ann Chamberlain, Amy Franceschini/Michael Swaine, David
Ireland, Bernie Lubell, Christian Maychack, Jim Melchert, Scott Oliver,
Stephanie Syjuco, Mark Thompson, Tony Tredway, and Anna Von Mertens. Southern

Mission 17 Gallery Gallery Hours: Thurs. - Sat. 2-5 pm Is the place where you live comfortable? How
does personal space translate into public view? In this show, four artists
investigate the fantasies and vulnerabilities at play in our ideals of home. Monica Canilao’s forts and enclosures look like structures built
by a child with what she found in her parents’ closet. Under close attention,
these loose arrangements of paintings, drawings, collages, hung fabric and tea
bags divulge an intimate view into how buildings and other edifices hold
memories. Jay
Nelson’s installations of tree houses are inspired by his experience of
building and living in one during a stay in Hawaii. His houses exhibit the
utility of lived-in structures, while still retaining a magical innocence. Ahndraya
Parlato’s series of photographs, “Inscapes,” explores the ways Gabrielle
Wolodarski explores the limits and possibilities of articulating In The Gloaming @ CELL SPACE Video Installation and Photography by |
